About CMC ROTC

Claremont McKenna College (CMC) Army ROTC prepares students to be officers in the U. S. Army. Through our partnership agreements, you can attend almost any four-year university, two-year graduate program, or community college in the Inland Empire of Southern California and take Army ROTC through Claremont McKenna College.

Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) is a college course designed to provide students with the necessary skills and leadership training to become officers in the United States Army, the Army Reserve, or the Army National Guard.

Cadets develop maturity, responsibility, leadership skills, and self-confidence. Army ROTC utilizes 23 distinct leadership dimensions to develop and train cadets in the fundamental skills that tomorrow's leaders will need. The development of these skills will help the student become successful in any career, not just the military!

The 4-year program
Traditionally, Army ROTC is a four-year program. The first two years of the program comprise the Basic Course (MS-I and MS-II). You can enroll in the program for the first two years without incurring any future military obligation (if you don't have an ROTC scholarship).

After you've successfully completed the Basic Course, you can compete to gain admission into the Advanced Course (MS-III and MS-IV). It's during this part of the program that you'll get to put your newfound management skills to the test.

As a Cadet in the Advanced Course, you'll spend 5-weeks during the summer between your junior and senior years attending the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC). At this course, you'll be asked to handle the complex tasks of a unit leader. You may have to lead your group across difficult terrain or build a bridge across a river. You may have to solve difficult personnel problems, or be in charge of expensive military equipment. It's all meant to teach you how to think quickly when the pressure is on and how to motivate your team. Then, as a cadet in the Advanced Course, your management skills will continue to be sharpened. You'll teach new ROTC students what you've learned. And when you graduate from college, you're ready to be a commissioned officer in the U. S. Army. During your four years in the program, all ROTC textbooks, uniforms, and essential materials will be furnished at no cost. In addition, if selected for the Advanced Course, you'll receive an allowance of up to $2,000 each year. see scholarships.

The 2-year program
If you miss the first two years of ROTC, and you are a graduate of a junior or community college entering a two-year postgraduate course of study, you may still qualify for a commission through the two-year program. In this program, you must first attend the ROTC Leadership Training Camp (LTC) at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Upon successful completion of LTC, you'll be eligible for the Advanced Course. You also may qualify for 2-year scholarship.

Green to Gold
The Green to Gold program seeks talented young enlisted soldiers who have decided to leave, or are considering leaving, active duty to attend college.
Quality enlisted soldiers with officer potential who have served at least two years on active duty are allowed to voluntarily request discharge from active duty, and enroll in Army ROTC to earn baccalaureate degrees and commissions as second lieutenants.

Simultaneous membership program (SMP)
This is a special program available only to non-scholarship and Guaranteed Reserve Force Duty (GRFD) cadets accepted into the Advanced Course of Army ROTC. Only Army ROTC offers this option. Cadets who choose to participate become members of the Army National Guard or the Army Reserve while participating in Army ROTC. These Cadets get to put the skills they have developed in Army ROTC to use in a real military unit as an Officer in Training. You will earn up to $200 a month for working just a weekend and also earn approximately $750 for two-weeks of work performed normally in the summer. The Army National Guard program also offers a tuition assistance program that reimburses you for up to 75% of your tuition per year, not to exceed $3,500.
For further information please contact a CMC cadre.
